King Lewanika Lodge is set in the heart of Liuwa Plain National Park, surrounded by the park’s seemingly endless grasslands and seasonal wetlands. Its remote location gives guests the opportunity to experience one of Zambia’s wildest and least-visited areas while enjoying the comforts of a luxury safari lodge. It houses the second largest wildebeest migration in Africa from October to December.
Getting to this remote park is by a small bush plane either from Livingstone or Lusaka. There are set departure times.
You can find blue wildebeest, plains zebra, tsessebe, red lechwe, oribi, common duiker and steenbok across the plains. Liuwa is particularly famous for its spotted hyenas, with a healthy population and excellent opportunities to observe their complex social behaviour.
During the rains, Liuwa becomes particularly impressive for birdlife. Seasonal pans and flooded grasslands attract large numbers of waterbirds, including cranes, storks, herons, pelicans and various migratory species.
King Lewanika is an intimate camp with just six luxury safari tents, including a two-bedroom family tent. The spacious tents are raised above the ground and positioned to take advantage of the wide-open views across the surrounding plains. Each has a comfortable bedroom, en-suite bathroom and a private veranda, providing a quiet place to sit and enjoy the wilderness between activities.
