Kruger National Park is one of Africa’s most iconic wildlife reserves, offering an authentic safari experience that blends incredible biodiversity, breathtaking landscapes, and exceptional wildlife viewing.
Situated in the northeastern part of South Africa, the park spans across the Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces, stretching from the Crocodile River in the south to the Limpopo River in the north. It shares borders with Mozambique to the east and Zimbabwe to the north, forming part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park.
Covering nearly 20,000 square kilometres (about 7,700 square miles), Kruger is one of the largest and most diverse game reserves in Africa. Its vast landscapes range from open savannah and dense bushveld to riverine forests and granite outcrops. The park is home to an astounding 147 mammal species, over 500 bird species, and 114 reptiles, making it a wildlife enthusiast’s paradise.
Visitors have the chance to spot the legendary Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo — along with cheetah, hippo, giraffe, zebra, and countless antelope species.
Kruger’s excellent infrastructure makes it accessible and easy to explore.
Visitors can choose between guided game drives, walking safaris, or self-drive adventures, with a well-maintained road network and numerous picnic spots, rest camps, and lookout points throughout the park

Kruger’s month-by-month of what you can expect:
🌿 January – February: Hot, Humid and Green (Peak Summer)
- Temperature: 30 – 47 °C
- Conditions: Expect hot days, warm nights, and regular afternoon thunderstorms.
- What to Expect: The park is at its most vibrant, with lush vegetation and plenty of newborn animals. Birding is excellent, and predators are often active due to the abundance of young prey. However, dense bush can make spotting wildlife slightly more challenging. Due to the rainy season some roads do become flooded and difficult to drive on.
🌦️ March – April: Cooling Down and Drying Out
- Temperature: 18 – 31 °C
- Conditions: Rainfall decreases and humidity begins to drop.
- What to Expect: As summer fades, the landscape remains green but visibility improves. Wildlife sightings increase as the vegetation starts thinning, and game drives become more comfortable with cooler mornings and evenings.
❄️ May – June: Start of the Dry Season (Early Winter)
- Temperature: 10 – 28 °C
- Conditions: Dry, sunny days and crisp mornings.
- What to Expect: With little rain and shrinking water sources, animals begin gathering around rivers and waterholes, making them easier to find. Morning and evening drives can be chilly, so warm layers are recommended.
🐘 July – August: Prime Safari Months
- Temperature: 8 – 26 °C
- Conditions: Clear skies, low humidity, and virtually no rainfall.
- What to Expect: These are some of the best months for game viewing. Sparse vegetation and concentrated water sources mean frequent sightings of large herds and predators. Early mornings and evenings are cold, so pack warm clothing for drives.
☀️ September: Warming Up Before the Rains
- Temperature: 12 – 30 °C
- Conditions: Dry, warm days and cool nights.
- What to Expect: Wildlife viewing remains excellent as the bush stays thin and animals continue gathering at waterholes. Temperatures climb steadily, and anticipation builds for the first summer rains.
🌦️ October – November: Hot Spring Days and the First Rains
- Temperature: 18 – 33 °C
- Conditions: Increasing heat with occasional afternoon showers.
- What to Expect: The first rains bring fresh green growth, and many animals start calving. Predator sightings can be exciting during this time, and bird activity increases as migratory species return.
☀️ December: Lush Landscapes and Summer Storms
- Temperature: 30 – 47 °C
- Conditions: Hot, humid weather with regular afternoon thunderstorms.
What to Expect: The park is alive with new life, lush scenery, and dramatic skies — perfect for photography. While the thicker vegetation can make animals harder to spot, wildlife activity remains high and birding is superb. Due to the rainy season some roads do become flooded and difficult to drive on.
